Colonial Wardrobe & Textiles Artisan

Supervises: none

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manufactures (using home & industrial style sewing machine, serger, and by hand), alters, and maintains historically accurate reproduction 17th century garments and related items. Solves clothing problems for CID (role-playing) staff.
  • Answers questions for staff and public via phone and email.
  • Helps to maintain accurate records of department’s activities including clothing issued to interpreters, volunteer hours, embroidery samples, knitting kits, etc.
  • Coordinates hospitality for volunteer embroiderers/lace makers for jacket project, including set-up & clean up of drinks, snacks, meals; troubleshooting for volunteers.
  • Demonstrates, describes, and interprets 17th century tailoring and other fiber arts for the public in the Crafts Center, as needed.
  • Runs errands to/from other parts of museum or off-site to dry-cleaner, etc.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Creates, repairs and maintains dress-related items using related textile skills, such as knitting, narrow weaving, dyeing, etc.
  • Conducts research to improve/expand current program or for new programs/exhibits.
  • Documents research through written or visual means (articles/memos, photographs, diagrams, etc.)
  • Occasionally conducts lectures or workshops for the staff or public.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • .
  • Tailoring, fitting, and alteration skills, excellence at hand sewing, patching and darning; some experience in pattern drafting.
  • Experience conducting research and producing written or visual reports.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; basic digital photography skills. Ability to keep accurate records; attention to detail; skill at spatial relations; ability to interpret and follow instructions from written, oral, and diagram sources.
  • Ability to operate a standard home sewing machine, serger, washer, and dryer.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public, other employees, interns, and volunteers; good communication skills; commitment to Plimoth Plantation’s bicultural mission.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs; to sit, stand and kneel; close vision.

Apprentice Colonial Interpreter

The Colonial Interpretation Department currently has four positions open for full time role players/guides at our historic Mayflower II and 1627 English Village. These are full-time (32-40 hours per week), seasonal positions through December 1, 2008.

After an initial 2 week paid orientation, Apprentice Interpreters work Thursday through Monday with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off each week. The rate of pay is $8.80 an hour, with a number of overtime opportunities. A personal interview is required.

This position trains for work both aboard Mayflower II and in the 1627 English Village.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Interprets the history of Plymouth Colony, Plimoth Plantation Inc, and Mayflower II with particular emphasis on the Plymouth colonists’ origins, arrival, and presence in New England; the indigenous peoples; the colonists’ profound impact on the land and on the established Wampanoag communities; and the complex issues raised in the contact of cultures that have molded modern America.
  • Engages museum visitors in powerful personal encounters with this history by incorporating accurate information, communication skills, appropriate activities, and first or third person presentation techniques.
  • Meets visitors where they are and guides them to a new level of understanding of the two cultures that are central to the museum’s mission.
  • Adapts and adjusts interpretation to delight and challenge the full range of visitors, ensuring a memorable experience for each visitor.
  • Studies written training materials, an assigned 17th-century English dialect, tasks and hand skills in order to exhibit 17th century agricultural, domestic and maritime life (training materials & instruction provided.)
  • Wears correctly and maintains provided reproduction period wardrobe (provided).
  • Continues to develop historical knowledge, communication skills, and hand skills as outlined on the departmental Performance Criteria.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Experience working in front of the public.
  • Ability to communicate with others, including strong verbal skills and a fluency in the English language.
  • Ability to read, view and analyze a variety of primary and secondary historical sources.
  • Ability to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work in teams.
  • Weekend and holiday work

Physical Demands: The duties of this job include climbing stairs, ladders, companionways and/or gangways (at various angles); wearing 17th c. wardrobe made from linen and wool, including period footwear; working without eye-glasses; manipulating 17th c. implements and tools. The indoor work places are not climate controlled. Most of the work is out doors and includes exposure to marine tar, paint, etc., a variety of plants and animals, open fires, varied terrain.

Media Manager/Webmaster

Plimoth Plantation is looking for a Media Manager and Webmaster to fill a full-time, year-round position in the museum’s marketing department. The successful candidate will produce video and audio content in all formats from HD theatrical release to the web; manage, maintain and develop new initiatives for the website; produce graphics and other assets for web and video productions; and manage social networks and blogs including Facebook, MySpace, You Tube, and Twitter.

Applicants must have a firm command of video and audio production and post production, be able to shoot, audio record, and edit for video; understand video delivery formats and compression techniques from HD to flash; write and structure validated HTML and CSS; and be able to use both MAC and PC.

Applicants should also be proficient with Final Cut Studio, Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, AfterEffects and other related software; and be comfortable with LAMP web servers as well as installing and trouble-shooting applications like Wordpress and other components.

Coding skills including MySQL, PHP, Action Script, and related skills in music composition, photography, cinematography and animation are a plus.

Must be detail oriented, a self-starter and a team player with at least three years of related experience. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Housekeeper

Two positions available:

  1. Full-time, year-round 40 hours per week  7 a.m. - 3 p.m.
  2. Full-time, seasonal 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday

Primary Responsibility: 
Ensures that all buildings are clean, trash removed and set-ups completed for functions.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • perform all housekeeping tasks assigned by Associate Director, Facilities or Housekeeping  Supervisor.
  • perform function set-ups as required.
  • keep all assigned patios and buildings free of trash and safety hazards.
  • assist Guest Services & Security with any emergency that arises.
  • use and maintain equipment in a professional manner.
  • be self-motivated and work productively without constant supervision to ensure that Plimoth Plantation’s facilities and grounds provide a proper image for our visitors.
  • may be required to fill in security shifts on holidays and weekends.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to sit or stand, occasionally to crouch or kneel and operate cleaning equipment. Lifting, carrying and placement of various types of furniture used by the Plantation. Be able to transport carts with bulk furniture up to 100+ lb.
